Essay tips:
1. Numbers Spell out #s when they start a sent better- avoid starting sentences with #s Spell out 1-9.
2. Questions Avoid starting essays with prompt or rhetorical questions Avoid questions (only answers and claims)
3. Avoid personal pronouns Avoid “in my opinion” and “I believe” Avoid “you”
4. Proof read for Run-ons (40%), Fragments (10%) Separate sentences and ideas Fix fragments with complete sentences
5. Check homophones (their/there/their and your/you’re)
6. Use academic language - Identify vague language and slang Stuff/things All the time / everyone/ Dumb/
7. Introduction: Hook first, not thesis no questions, just answers confirm thesis location – never the first sentence

2. Students who are not in their seats, on task, by the bell will receive a tardy.
3. Students who forget to put their name on their work must redo the assignment entirely (no-name files are posted weekly on my website).
4. Students will be assigned gum detail for 3 gum chewing offenses in ELA
5. Teachers can assign detention for disruptions in class or advisory, including asking students to stay behind when class is dismissed.
6. Teachers can hold any student to discuss behavior or grades during advisory since early release lunch is a privilege, not a right.
